What is Prostin?

Prostin, also known as Dinoprostone, is a prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) that occurs naturally in the body. It is used medically to induce labor, aid in cervical ripening, and manage certain pregnancy-related conditions.

Prostin Uses:

  • Labor Induction: Used to prepare the cervix for labor induction near term (end of pregnancy).
  • Abortion: Can be used to induce abortion between 12 to 20 weeks of pregnancy, or to manage incomplete abortion or miscarriage up to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Other Uses: Also used for treating benign hydatidiform mole, a specific type of uterine condition.

Prostin Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Fever, irregular heartbeats, nausea, stomach pain, and back pain.
  • Serious Side Effects: Light-headed feeling, weak or shallow breathing, vaginal bleeding, unexpected stomach pain, chest pain, easy bruising, and bleeding from wounds.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor of any allergies to Prostin or related medications.
  • Medical History: Discuss any history of anemia, asthma, low blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, infections in the vaginal area, or seizure disorder.

How to Take Prostin:

  • Administration: Inserted vaginally as a suppository by a healthcare provider.
  • Positioning: Remain reclined or lying down for at least 10 minutes after insertion.
  • Dosage: Additional doses may be given every 3-5 hours until the desired effect (contractions or abortion) is achieved, typically not exceeding 48 hours.
  • Hospital Setting: It should only be used in a hospital under medical supervision due to the need for monitoring and potential complications.

Storage:

Store at room temperature (68ºF to 77ºF), away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Prostin vs Cytotec (Misoprostol):

  • Prostin (Dinoprostone): Naturally occurring prostaglandin used for labor induction and managing specific uterine conditions.
  • Cytotec (Misoprostol): Used primarily to prevent stomach ulcers when taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and for inducing abortion or managing postpartum hemorrhage.

Side Effects Comparison:

  • Prostin: Fever, irregular heartbeats, nausea, stomach pain, back pain.
  • Cytotec: Diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vaginal bleeding.
