What is Secnidazole?

Secnidazole is an anti-parasitic and antimicrobial medication used to treat infections caused by protozoa and certain strains of anaerobic bacteria. It belongs to the nitroimidazole class of drugs.

Secnidazole Uses

  • Bacterial Vaginosis : In women, secnidazole is effective in treating bacterial vaginosis, which is caused by an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vagina.
  • Other Infections : It is also used for treating infections of the stomach, intestines, urinary tract, and genital area caused by protozoa and anaerobic bacteria.

How to Take Secnidazole

  • The medication comes in granules that should be mixed with applesauce, yogurt, or pudding, and consumed immediately without chewing.
  • Drink a full glass of water after swallowing the mixture.

Missed Dose

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s near the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose

  • Accidental overdose may cause symptoms like stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Seek medical attention if overdose is suspected.

  • Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment.
