One-Side Nose Block: Causes, Warning Signs, Diagnosis & Treatment- By Consultant ENT Head & Neck Surgeon, ONUS Robotic Hospitals

One-side nose block is a common problem seen in many people. However, it is not always due to a simple cold. It may occur due to a deviated nasal septum, allergy, sinus infection, nasal polyps, turbinate swelling, nose injury, or a foreign body in children.

Persistent one-sided nasal blockage should not be ignored, especially if it is repeated or associated with bleeding, bad smell, facial pain, headache, breathing difficulty, snoring, sleep disturbance, or foul discharge in children. Proper ENT evaluation helps identify the exact cause and choose the right treatment.

In this video, Consultant ENT Head & Neck Surgeon at ONUS Robotic Hospitals, explains the common causes of one-side nose block, warning signs, diagnosis, and when ENT consultation is needed.

Why Does One-Side Nose Block Happen?

One-side nose block means one nostril feels blocked more than the other. Sometimes this may happen temporarily due to cold, allergy, or the natural nasal cycle. But if it is persistent or keeps coming back, it may indicate an underlying nasal or sinus problem.

Common causes include:

Deviated nasal septum
Allergic rhinitis
Sinus infection
Nasal polyps
Turbinate swelling
Nose injury
Foreign body in children
Adenoid-related blockage in children
Nasal mass or growth in rare cases
Chronic sinusitis

What Is DNS or Deviated Septum?

DNS means Deviated Nasal Septum. The nasal septum is the wall made of bone and cartilage that divides the two nostrils. When this wall is bent to one side, one nasal passage becomes narrower.

A deviated septum can block one side of the nose and reduce airflow, making breathing difficult. It may be present from birth or develop after a nose injury.

Symptoms of DNS may include:

One-side nasal blockage
Difficulty breathing through one nostril
Mouth breathing
Snoring
Headache
Repeated sinus infections
Dryness or crusting in the nose
Nosebleeds in some cases

How Allergy and Sinus Infection Cause Nose Block

Allergy can cause swelling inside the nose. This swelling can narrow the nasal passage and cause blockage, sneezing, watery discharge, itching, and post-nasal drip.

Sinus infection may cause:

Blocked nose
Facial pain or pressure
Headache
Thick nasal discharge
Post-nasal drip
Bad smell
Cough
Fever in some cases

When swelling and mucus block the sinus drainage pathways, symptoms may become persistent or recurrent.

Nasal Polyps Symptoms

Nasal polyps are soft, non-cancerous growths inside the nose or sinuses. Small polyps may not cause symptoms, but larger polyps or multiple polyps can block airflow.

Symptoms may include:

Blocked nose
Reduced smell
Reduced taste
Post-nasal drip
Snoring
Repeated sinus infections
Facial pressure
Mouth breathing
Headache

Medicines may help reduce swelling in some cases, but endoscopic treatment or surgery may be required if polyps are large, recurrent, or not improving with medicines.

Foreign Body in Children: Warning Signs

In children, one-side nose block can happen when a small object is stuck inside the nose. Children may insert beads, seeds, paper, erasers, toy parts, or other small objects.

Warning signs in children include:

One-side foul-smelling nasal discharge
Bad smell from one nostril
Nasal blockage on one side
Blood-stained discharge
Nosebleed
Irritability
Child saying they inserted something
Repeated rubbing of the nose
Headache on one side

Parents should not try to remove deep foreign bodies at home. Wrong removal attempts can push the object deeper and cause bleeding or injury. ENT evaluation is the safest option.

When Are Nose Bleed, Smell Loss, Headache and Facial Pain Serious?

Some symptoms need early ENT evaluation.

Do not ignore one-side nose block if it is associated with:

Nosebleed
Bad smell
Foul discharge
Loss of smell
Facial pain
Headache
Breathing difficulty
Snoring
Sleep disturbance
Repeated sinus infections
One-sided symptoms in children
Symptoms after nose injury
Symptoms not improving with routine medicines

Persistent one-sided symptoms should always be evaluated to rule out structural blockage, infection, polyps, foreign body, or other nasal conditions.

Why ENT Endoscopy May Be Needed

Nasal endoscopy helps the ENT specialist see inside the nose clearly using a thin camera. It can identify structural blockage, septum deviation, polyps, turbinate swelling, sinus drainage problems, infection, foreign body, adenoids, or growths.

Nasal endoscopy may be advised when:

Nose block is persistent
One-side symptoms are present
Nasal polyps are suspected
Foreign body is suspected
Sinus symptoms keep coming back
There is foul smell or bleeding
Symptoms do not improve with medicines
Surgery planning is needed

Diagnosis of One-Side Nose Block

Diagnosis may include:

Detailed ENT history
Nasal examination
Nasal endoscopy
Allergy assessment
Sinus evaluation
CT scan of sinuses in selected cases
Assessment for DNS, polyps, turbinate swelling, infection, or foreign body

The treatment depends on the exact cause, so proper diagnosis is important.

Treatment Options

Treatment may vary from medicines to procedures depending on the cause.

1. Medicines

If allergy or infection is the cause, treatment may include:

Antihistamines
Nasal sprays
Saline nasal wash
Decongestants for short-term use only
Antibiotics only when bacterial infection is suspected
Anti-inflammatory medicines

2. Nasal Sprays and Allergy Care

Doctor-advised nasal sprays can reduce swelling and improve airflow. Allergy control may include avoiding dust, pollution, strong smells, pollen, and other triggers.

3. Foreign Body Removal

In children, the foreign body should be removed safely by an ENT specialist. Blind attempts at home should be avoided.

4. Endoscopic Procedures

Endoscopic ENT procedures may be required for nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis, or persistent blockage.

5. Surgery

Surgery may be advised in selected cases such as severe DNS, recurrent sinusitis, large nasal polyps, or structural blockage.

Possible procedures include:

Septoplasty for DNS
Turbinate reduction
Endoscopic sinus surgery
Polyp removal
Adenoid evaluation and treatment in children

When Should You Consult an ENT Specialist?

Consult an ENT doctor if you have:

One-side nose block lasting many days
Repeated nasal blockage
Nosebleed
Bad smell from one nostril
Foul discharge in children
Facial pain or headache
Loss of smell
Snoring or sleep disturbance
Breathing difficulty
Nasal blockage after injury
Symptoms not improving with medicines

Early diagnosis can prevent complications and help restore better breathing comfort.
