Knock knees in children

Knock Knees in Children: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment: Dr. Balaraju Naidu, Robotic Orthopedic Surgeon

Knock knees, medically called Genu Valgum, is a condition where a child’s knees touch each other while the ankles remain apart when standing. This creates an inward bend of the legs. Many parents get worried when they notice this, but in most young children, knock knees are a normal part of growth.

Is It Normal or a Problem?

Knock knees are commonly seen in children between 2 to 6 years. As they grow, their bones and joints slowly realign and the legs usually straighten naturally by 7 to 8 years of age.

However, not all cases are normal.

When to Consult a Doctor

You should seek a medical evaluation if:

  • Knock knees are seen before age 2
  • The inward bending is increasing over time
  • Only one leg is affected
  • The child has pain or difficulty walking
  • The child is above 7 years and still has significant knock knees

Causes of Knock Knees

Some common causes include:

  • Normal growth variations
  • Vitamin D or Calcium deficiency
  • Obesity affecting leg alignment
  • Genetic factors
  • Injury or bone infection (rare)

Diagnosis & Tests

A pediatric orthopedic specialist may perform:

  • Physical examination
  • Leg alignment measurement
  • Blood tests to check Vitamin D & Calcium
  • X-ray if needed
  • Gait and foot posture evaluation

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on severity:

Condition Severity Treatment Approach
Mild / Normal Growth Just observation and follow-up
Vitamin Deficiency Supplements + Sunlight exposure
Muscle Weakness Physiotherapy & Strengthening Exercises
Severe Persistent Cases Bracing or Corrective Surgery (safe & precise)

Can Knock Knees Cause Future Problems?

If untreated and severe, knock knees can lead to:

  • Knee pain
  • Difficulty running or playing
  • Early knee arthritis in adulthood
    That’s why early evaluation matters.

Knock knees in children are usually harmless and resolve naturally. But if the condition is severe, painful, or persistent, proper orthopedic guidance is essential.
At ONUS Robotic Hospitals, we provide advanced pediatric orthopedic care with accurate assessment and safe treatment options.
